Traditional Lash extensions in Baltimore

Lash extensions are a popular beauty enhancement that can give you longer, fuller lashes. They are individual synthetic or natural hairs that are glued to your existing lashes for a more dramatic look. Lash extensions come in different lengths, thicknesses, and styles to give you a customized look that complements your eyes and face shape.

Cyanoacrylate-Based adhesive

FIGURE: Cyanoacrylate Molecule

Lash extensions are attached to your natural eyelashes individually using a resin adhesive made primarily from Cyanoacrylate. Cyanoacrylate is a thermoset resin that is renowned for its incredible adhesive properties. Originally developed in 1942 for wartime use, it is now also frequently used in formulations of nail glue + superglue.

It typically is “cured” or dried after exposure to the air (or water) via an oxidation reaction, but the curing process occurs in layers from the outer surface of the adhesive towards the innermost portions of the adhesive. Think of a piece of fruit left out to dry - the outermost portions of the fruit will become dried out faster than the interior.

Because the process of drying works in layers, traditional lash extensions take 24-48 hours to fully cure. This means clients who receive lash extensions must keep their lash extensions dry and avoid water for at least 24 hours post-service. Water will rapidly “shock-cure” the lash glue which may result in a whitish appearance to the lashes, as well as inappropriate adhesion. It’s best to allow the air to thoroughly dry the lash glue slowly in layers.

The UV LED Gel™️ Difference

LED UV (Ultraviolet) Gel Lash Extensions are a novel application method for lash extensions that was developed in Eastern Europe. Unlike traditional lash extensions, LED Gel Lash Extensions use a gel formulation instead of adhesive. The gel is cured with a LED light, creating a strong bond that lasts longer and requires less maintenance.

The science of LED Gel lash extensions is similar to that of LED Gel nail products - the adhesive resin is still Cyanoacrylate-based, but it also contains photoinitiators that are chemically activated by photon particles in light. Typically, the light is within the range of 340 to 380 nanometers, just above the visible light spectrum.

The photoinitiators in the adhesive resin create a highly oxidative environment that leads to rapid curing of the adhesive resin within a matter of minutes as opposed to hours. The lashes are cured immediately after they’re placed on your natural lashes by your aesthetician to ensure the closest possible bond. Normally, your traditional lash extensions may become dislodged during the drying process once you leave the salon.

The Primary Benefits of LED Gel™️ Lashes

  • Decreased Curing TIme — Obviously, one of the most desirable outcomes of LED Gel lash extensions is the significant reduction in curing time. You’ll be able to walk out of the Lash Lab of Baltimore with fully dried lash extensions.

  • Hypoallergenic — The adhesive resin in LED Gel lashes is clear - the Carbon black dyes (which tend to be irritating) that are needed to mask whitish appearance that can occur after shock-curing are not included in LED Gel adhesive.

  • No Need to Avoid Water — Because your lashes will be fully cured at the end of your appointment, you won’t need to avoid water after your service. Feel free to shower and cleanse your face as always!

  • 50%+ Increased Longevity — As the lashes are immediately cured while in close proximity to your natural lashes, there is less risk of accidentally loosening or removing your the lash extensions over time.

STEP ONE: Preparing for LED Gel Lashes

Lash Lab of Baltimore

The esthetician will first clean your lashes and eye area to remove any makeup, oil, or dirt. This is important to ensure that the adhesive used to attach the lashes will have a good bond with your natural lashes.

STEP TWO: Lash Lab Algorithm™️

At the Lash Lab, we’re renowned for our proprietary Lash Algorithm, which incorporates your existing lash dimensions + your desired style to create the optimal design. Lash Lab designs incorporate 2 different curl patterns, as well as up to 6 different lengths to achieve a fluttery + variegated appearance. Our most popular lash design is our Classic Glamour lash, which is an updated take on the American Classic lash extension.

After cleansing your lashes, the aesthetician will take measurements and enter your information into the Algorithm. The Algorithm will return a custom lash design (often referred to as a “map”) that she’ll use to direct the lash application.

STEP THREE: Applying the LED Gel Lashes

Just as with traditional lash extensions, your lash aesthetician will apply each lash extension to your natural lashes, one-by-one in accordance with the design prescribed by the Algorithm. After each lash extension is applied, she will turn on the LED Gel light to briefly begin the curing process. You will likely hear a “clicking” sound associated with the activation of the LED light.

STEP THREE: Finalizing the Lashes

Once lash extensions have been applied to each of your lashes, your aesthetician will spend 2-3 minutes applying the LED light to each eye to ensure that the resin adhesive is fully cured. She’ll ask you to slowly open your eyes, at which point any uncured portions giving you discomfort can be cured again.

After all of the extensions are cured, the esthetician will brush your lashes to ensure that they are all separated and in the correct position.

Considerations for Lash Extensions in Baltimore

Lash Lab of Baltimore Aftercare

FIGURE: Demonstration of Proper Lash Aftercare

Baltimore has a very humid climate given its proximity to the ocean. Humidity tends to lead to shock-curing of adhesive resins that impedes longevity. Many lash extension clients in the Baltimore report that they experience poor retention of their extension services.

LED Gel lashes are a particularly important innovation for clients within damp environments like Baltimore.

Aftercare for LED Gel Lash Extensions

As previously mentioned, one of the most desirable benefits of LED Gel lash extensions is the simplified aftercare procedures. The table below highlights some of the primary differences between LED Gel Lashes & traditional lash extensions.
